Is Epoxy Flooring Safe for Home Use?

Posted on September 9, 2021 by Brent Phillips

Because epoxy-resin flooring is based on a chemical reaction, some people wonder, “Is epoxy safe for home use?” As long as the installation is performed correctly, epoxy flooring is absolutely safe for home use. Throughout the rest of this blog, we’ll explain everything you need to know about the safe installation of epoxy resin flooring.

How Does Epox Flooring Work?

First, let’s talk about how epoxy flooring works. Epoxy resin is a chemical compound made from two parts. A polyepoxide and a curative are mixed together before placing on the surface to be floored. When the chemicals react to each other, they bond together and the surface to which they are applied. The epoxy material they create is stronger than the individual parts were apart.

Always Ventilate While Installing Epoxy Flooring

Because epoxy is applied as a liquid, it must dry in order to set up. You can think of this process as similar to painting a house. While the paint is wet, proper ventilation is required for the safety of all persons within the work area. The same is true for epoxy. During the period of time the floor is curing, proper ventilation must be maintained.

1. Acid-Based Epoxy Flooring

There are two main types of epoxy resin for flooring: acid-based and water-based. Acid-based epoxy flooring is appropriate for installation in areas where ventilation is easier, such as above-ground rooms with many windows or doors. Acid-based epoxy flooring is also a good choice for garages and workshops, as it creates a floor somewhat stronger than water-based epoxy.

2. Water-Based Epoxy Flooring

Water-based epoxy flooring is often chosen for closed spaces such as basements or bathrooms. This is because the fumes it produces during the installation face are slightly softer than those of acid-based epoxy flooring. However, ALL epoxy installations should have ventilation to adhere to safety guidelines.
